Mount Cinnamon
Mount Cinnamon
Irvin Bay Review
Location
On a steep hillside above the southern end of Grand Anse beach, one of the Caribbean’s loveliest strands – a long curve of soft, white sand, shaded by sea grapes, almond trees and palms. The views from the property – along the beach up the coast to St George’s and over the lush, mountainous heart of Grenada – are fantastic. It’s a three-minute walk through a field below the hotel down to the property’s lovely beach club.
Note that a large new hotel is being constructed next to Mount Cinnamon, resulting in building work for some time.
Style and Character
From the outside, the whitewashed, terracotta-roofed buildings have a Mediterranean look. Within, you’re blasted with primary colours – in the open-plan, multi-arched lounge/bar/restaurant, the beach club and in the apartments and villas. The place feels fun and upbeat, chic and informal.
Service and Facilities
Mount Cinnamon is owned by entrepreneur Peter de Savary, who is very involved with Grenada. Service is personal and extremely willing. All rooms come equipped with mobile phone pre-set with the hotel’s contact numbers. The pool, in a courtyard off the side of the bar, lacks privacy and is a little disappointing, but otherwise the facilities are excellent. A key selling point of Mount Cinnamon is its Beach Cabana, a stylish yet supremely relaxing beach club nestled in a palm grove on Grand Anse’s sands. It includes a lounge bar set under a tent-effect ceiling painted with palms and parrots, plus a well-maintained croquet lawn, volleyball court, yoga platform (sessions several times a week, for a small fee), and kayaks, paddle boards, sailboats and snorkelling equipment. There’s also a dive centre here. Spa treatments are offered in an open-air cabana at the beach club, or indoors at the hotel proper, where you’ll also find a gym (with lovely views) and tennis court.

Rooms
Cheapest are the recently opened Cinnamon Suites – spacious, stylish, understated rooms with wood flooring, mosaic-tiled shower rooms, Nespresso machines and white-leather chairs on balconies, from which the views are sensational.
The rest of the accommodation takes the form of apartments (called Hacienda suites), with a separate sitting room and bedroom and two bathrooms, and split-level villas with one, two or three bedrooms. The Hacienda suites and villas are boldly decorated with lime green and purple pieces of furniture, eye-catching, tropical-themed modern art, as well as homely touches such as baskets of novels and arrays of decorative shells, and have excellently equipped full kitchens. The villas are up a steep slope above the public areas of the hotel, but the superlative views from them compensates for the climb.
Food and Drink
Savvy’s restaurant is relaxed and fairly low-key, with Caribbean dishes and local ingredients at the fore. Dinner of lobster, apple and goat’s cheese salad to start, followed by fish of the day with sautéed potatoes and green beans as a main course, and Grenadian chocolate mousse with nutmeg ice-cream to finish, was good without being especially noteworthy. At breakfast there’s an emphasis on the homemade (cinnamon yoghurt, muesli, banana bread) and local (fruit and jams). The Beach Cabana is the place to go for lunch (perhaps burgers, catch of the day, linguine with lobster), and there’s a barbecue there one evening a week with live music.
Value for Money
Double rooms from USD$510 (£390) in low season; and from USD$630 (£482) in high. Breakfast included. Free Wi-Fi. Given the quality and spaciousness of the accommodation, this isn’t at all bad.
Access for guests with disabilities?
Not suitable. However, those with limited mobility can get a ride on a golf buggy up the steep slope to the suites and villas, and down to the beach.
Family-Friendly?
Plenty of families stay at Mount Cinnamon. The space and layout of the villas, and their facilities, make them ideal. There is a children’s menu. Babysitters can be arranged.
